- A MODEL FOR EUROPEAN MEMORY PROJECTS
Guarda che Storia
In Rome, a documentary eBook turned nine months of Nazi occupation into an interactive chronology, a network of biographies, and 250+ pages of testimony. The result is not just a book about Rome — it is a tested structure for telling any European city's occupation and liberation. We built it once. We believe it should be built again, elsewhere.
-The Premise
"Guarda che Storia" started from a simple frustration: a date on a calendar rarely means anything to the people who walk past the place where it happened. The Rome edition put ordinary streets and squares back on the map of occupation — not only the well-known sites, but the ones locals pass every day without knowing what took place there. The same gap exists in every city that lived through occupation and liberation.
An example of the timeline from July 1943 to June 1944, as it appears in the eBook we are presenting to you. This is useful for gaining an insight into the narrative power and structure of the book, which is intended as a tool for building and consolidating the Italian Republic and for providing a historical foundation for a popular culture that extends even beyond the war itself. This is just one example; in the book, the days are linked to the stories that will unfold in all their raw reality and humanity. Women, men, soldiers, office workers, priests and students – all united as a people in defence of the highest values of equality, freedom and dignity.
- The format
The Rome edition is a working proof of concept: three interlinked layers, each one usable on its own, and reusable for any city with its own dates, streets and testimonies.
- 01
A day-by-day, scrollable timeline: hold on a date to see the headline event, open it to read the full account. A living index that can be rebuilt around any city's own timeline of occupation.
- 02
Short, researched portraits of the people involved — known and unknown — linked back to the dates that shaped them. A format for restoring names that official history left out.
- 03
250+ pages built from first-hand accounts and period press, with video contributions from historians and institutional partners. Not a textbook — a book people actually read to the end.
- WHY IT WORKS — PROOF, NOT THEORY
ROME, THE JEWISH GHETTO
1943
A stranger lifts a child toward a passing woman. She only makes a sign. The child is handed to her, and lives.
roma ghetto ebraico
1943
On the day of the Rome Ghetto round-up, alongside the Nazi and Fascist officials, the Rome chronology also restores the names history left out: two nuns who hid dozens of Jewish citizens in their convent, and a passer-by who caught a child thrown to her from a deportation truck by a man she would never see again. It's one episode among many — and it's exactly the kind of detail a chronology of dates alone cannot hold. This is what the format is built to surface, city by city.
- The Principle
Rome has via Tasso and via Rasella — the sites everyone already knows. It also has Piazza Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, Piazza Bologna, Piazza dei Mirti: ordinary squares that carried real weight in 1943–44 and are walked through today without anyone knowing why. The same is almost certainly true of squares in Warsaw, Amsterdam, Paris, Athens, Oslo. The format exists to find them.

-BEYOND ROME
The material below is what we share with anyone evaluating the format: the synopsis, the direction notes behind how it was built, and the eBook itself. If your city, institution or programme is exploring how to tell an occupation-and-liberation story that people will actually read, we'd welcome the conversation.
